In love with crispy fried potatoes but worried about the calories they bring with them? Then these air fryer potato wedges will make you fall in love with them instantly as they have less than half the calories compared to the deep fried version but with zero compromise on taste!
Crispy fried potato is an emotion and not just a food! Be it the French fries or the potato wedges; it’s a global rage!
But for all the calorie counters like me, it becomes difficult to give in to the temptation because unfortunately fried potatoes come with loads of calories even though the humble raw potato is actually a low calorie food!
This is exactly where a good & trusty air fryer comes for our rescue! Air fryer potato wedges is a total win-win recipe with supreme crispiness on the outside and less than half the calories inside compared to the deep fried version!
What are Air fryer potato wedges?
I know I don’t really need to decode air fryer potato wedges as the name itself is self-explanatory; but just as a ritual let me tell you that this is nothing by crispy potato wedges which are fried in an air fryer with minimal oil.
As we all know potatoes taste best when they are deep fried in the form of either French fries or wedges. When it comes to potato wedges, you can bake them too in the oven to churn out crispy potatoes.
But but but… if you already own an air fryer, then you already have the potential of making the world’s crispiest potato wedges ever without any fuss! Because I feel these air fryer potato wedges turn out even crispier than their oven version!
Plus, an air fryer requires just a tiny amount of oil which means at least 70%-80% less calories compared to deep fried potatoes. And in an air fryer, you also won’t need to flip over the potato wedges in between; just a shake halfway through is enough!
So, compared to an oven, air fryer cooking is multiple times mess-free and much easier to handle. That’s the very reason I am shifting more towards air fryer these days compared to my very much well-loved oven.
Ingredients for air fryer potato wedges
Just a few ingredients which I am sure you already have at hand!
Potato: This is a potato recipe, so potato is the star of the show! Use fresh potatoes whose skins are smooth and not crinkled. Choose potatoes which are mostly of the same size so that you get potato wedges of the same size and they will cook evenly at the same time.
Olive oil: Use a good quality olive oil; extra virgin olive oil will also work. If you don’t have olive oil handy at the moment, you can actually use any oil of your choice; it won’t make much difference here.
Red chilli powder / paprika: My spicy air fryer potato wedges are seasoned with chilli powder to add a kick to the crispiness. You can substitute chilli powder with smoked paprika as well or create a combination of 2.
Turmeric powder: Being an Indian, adding turmeric powder wherever I can has become a ritual for me. So my air fryer potato wedges have that vibrant golden glow thanks to a pinch of turmeric.
Garlic powder: Garlic being my favorite aromatic, I added garlic powder into the seasoning for that extra flavor. If you don’t have garlic powder handy, you can skip it, but do not replace the powder with grated or minced garlic as they will burn in the high temperature of the air fryer.
Salt: Potatoes are salt lovers! Add salt in the seasoning and also you can hit the hot fried potatoes with a pinch of more salt once they are out of the air fryer.
Black pepper powder: Add this for an additional earthy kick to your crispy potatoes.
How to make air fryer potato wedges
This one is as easy as a breeze! Let’s see the step by step recipe.
Step 1: Wash the potatoes thoroughly by rubbing the outer skin to remove any trace of dirt. We will not peel the skin off as the skin makes the potatoes extra crispy; but do take your time to clean the potatoes really well.
Step 2: Once cleaned, take a large sharp knife and first cut each potato into half lengthwise. Then put the cut side down and cut each half into 2 pieces again lengthwise so you have 4 quarters of a potato now.
Step 3: Now place each quarter on the cutting board with the cut side up and cut it into 2 pieces from the center of the quarter, again lengthwise. So you have 8 wedges from one potato now. If the wedges are looking too thick then repeat the cutting from the center as the previous step.
Step 4: Now to ensure super-crispy potatoes, I would like you to apply one good old technique which I had seen my mom-in-law do before frying them.
Place the potato wedges in a large bowl and add enough fridge-cold water so that all the wedges remain inside the water. Also, drop in a few, about 10-12, ice cubes into this bowl so that the water remains chilled. Leave the potatoes to soak for at least 30 minutes.
Step 5: After about 30 minutes, drain out all the water and place the wedges on a clean kitchen towel and pat them dry. This step is also important; so ensure the wedges are as dry as possible.
Step 6: Now that the tough part is over, all you need to do is season the potatoes and air fry them! I prefer to prepare the seasoning separately first and then sprinkle it on top of the main ingredient which I am about to air fry or bake, which is potato in this case.
In a small mixing bowl, add garlic powder, red chilli powder or paprika, a pinch of turmeric powder, salt and black pepper powder. Give a good mix ensuring all the powdered ingredients are mixed evenly.
Step 7: Now take the dried potato wedges in a large mixing bowl and drizzle the olive oil on top. Then either shake the bowl or use your hands or spatula to distribute and mix in the oil thoroughly so that each wedge is coated. This will ensure that the seasoning sticks to each of the potato wedges.
Step 8: Once you are happy with the above step, sprinkle the prepared seasoning mix slowly and keep mixing it either by shaking the bowl or using a spatula. Each potato wedge must be coated with the spices.
Step 9: Preheat your air fryer at 200 C according to your model’s instructions.
Step 10: Once preheated, arrange the wedges inside the air fryer basket in a single layer. Air fry the potato wedges for 15 to 18 minutes giving a shake halfway during the cooking time. Check the crispiness of the wedges and if they are not crispy enough to your liking, air fry them for a minute longer and you would be done with the best ever crispy air fried potato wedges!
Serve them hot with ketchup or spicy yogurt dip and enjoy!
