Ingredients for garlic shrimp
Shrimp: Large jumbo shrimps work best in this recipe of garlic shrimp. Use fresh instead of frozen shrimps if you can source locally.
I always prefer to get my shrimps from the local market where I get the fresh catch. I, for some reason, haven’t come to terms with frozen peeled shrimps.
I know there is a bit of effort involved in cleaning and prepping the fresh shrimps before you can actually cook them, but I really believe it’s totally worth it.
With fresh shrimps, your garlic shrimp is guaranteed to turn out soft, succulent and unbelievably juicy which you can never accomplish with peeled frozen shrimps.
Garlic: Garlic, lots and lots of it, makes this garlic shrimp so incredibly addictive! Be generous with this aromatic here as this is the only flavoring component in this recipe.
To bring out the best flavor of garlic, I urge you to use fresh cloves of garlic which you mince just before making this dish!
Mincing garlic is the most time-consuming step in this garlic shrimp recipe as the cooking happens in a jiffy, just within 10 minutes!
If you don’t like cutting/chopping, you can consider buying this small chopper for such small kitchen chores.
Olive oil: I would recommend using olive oil for making my garlic shrimp recipe. If you don’t have olive oil handy, then only you may use any other flavorless oil.
But the combination of garlic with olive oil is simply mind-blowing; it takes this garlic shrimp to a whole new level of taste and addictiveness!
Chilli flakes: Your garlic shrimp cannot be flat in taste! There has to be a kick which would force you to reach for one shrimp after another and that’s exactly what the chilli flakes do here!
The hint of subtle spiciness makes this easy garlic shrimp simply unputdownable! You can adjust the amount based on your level of tolerance for spiciness!
Paprika: As they say that we eat with our eyes first; hence enters paprika to impart that vibrant reddish orange hue to your shrimps making you salivating as soon as you see them!
If you don’t have paprika, you can use our good old Kashmiri red chilli powder which will add the bright red color without any heat.
Seasoning: Finally, round things up by rightly seasoning your garlic shrimp with salt and black pepper to taste.
Spring onion greens/Cilantro: To add a burst of freshness, garnish your garlic shrimp either with freshly chopped coriander leaves or spring onion greens before serving.
How to make the easiest ever garlic shrimp?
Step 1: If you have got fresh whole shrimps then prepare them first by removing their heads, then peel the skin off but keep their tails on. Then devein each shrimp properly. Wash and drain out all the water.
Step 2: Finely mince the garlic cloves. You will need a lot of garlic and they need to be finely minced before you start cooking.
Step 3: Now heat a frying pan until it is medium hot. Then add the olive oil (or any other flavorless oil of your choice) and let it warm up a little.
Step 4: Once the oil is warm, reduce the flame to minimum and add all the minced garlic. Sauté them for a minute on low flame so that they become fragrant without being burnt.
Step 5: Now add the washed shrimps to the pan and spread them in a single layer. Allow them to cook and turn bright orangish pink for a couple of minutes keeping the flame low.
Step 6: Season the shrimps with salt & pepper to taste. Give a good stir flipping them over to cook the other side evenly too for 3 to 4 minutes.
Step 7: Sprinkle chilli flakes and paprika (or red chilli powder) and stir the shrimps to mix the spices evenly. Cook for another minute or until all the shrimps are cooked through.
Step 8: Switch off the flame. Drizzle lime juice and garnish with freshly chopped green onion. Give a final mix! Your easiest garlic shrimp is ready! Serve over rice or pasta and enjoy!
